What is this game?

Ogostic is an indie outdoor game from Brooklyn, New York. Two players each hold an antler-shaped wooden stick with a forked tip, and use the stick to catch and throw a hand-woven hemp ball (~33 cm).

Think "lacrosse simplified and slowed down to a graceful exchange." The kit is compact, the motion is satisfying, and Ogostic is gaining traction on lawns, beaches, and at campsites as a fresh alternative to standard outdoor games.

Equipment & setup

  • Sticks — wooden, antler-shaped (Y-fork at the tip), 2 of them
  • Ball — hemp-woven, ~33 cm diameter
  • Open space — players stand 5–10 m apart

Official kits are available from Ogostic's distributors and select outdoor retailers.

Players & ages

  • Two players is standard; multi-set play works for 4 or 6
  • Teens and adults; kids can play at shorter distances

Rules

Minimal rules (just play)

  1. Stand 5–10 m apart
  2. Hook the ball on your stick and toss it toward your partner
  3. Your partner catches with their stick's forked tip
  4. They toss it back the same way
  5. Compete on consecutive catches, or play a timed format

Standard rules

  • The ball must not be touched with hands (sticks only)
  • Drop? Scoop it up with the stick and continue
  • For competitive play, set rally targets or time limits

Official competition rules

The Ogostic competition scene is still emerging; communities use local conventions. The Brooklyn home crowd plays freestyle — rules stay loose.

Tips for enjoying the game

Common beginner mistakes

  • Wanting to grab with hands — stick only; resist the urge
  • Throwing too hard — soft arcs are easier to catch and look better
  • Staying still — move with the catch, mirror your partner

How to make it more fun

  • Beat the partner record for consecutive catches
  • Group circle: pass around in sequence
  • Beach play adds an automatic workout

Age variations

  • Kids: 3 m distance, softer ball
  • Adult beginners: start with catches, build up to throws
  • Active types: add running tag formats or scoring

Playing Ogostic in Japan

  • Available via outdoor specialty shops (often via parallel import)
  • Park lawns, riversides, and beaches all work
  • Still niche — playing in public turns heads
